David James Walker, 1941-2004

This has been quite a week.

My Dad died unexpectedly last Thursday. I never saw it coming, and wasn’t really ready for it at all. Is anyone ever ready for that? I guess not.

We weren’t as close as a father and son should be, because he wasn’t around for most of my childhood, due to divorce. In a way I think this makes his death harder to bear, because I’ll never get to the chance to get close to him in this life, and I don’t have the great memories of him that his wife Sandi and his stepdaughters Patti and Michelle have.

But, on the other hand, after spending time with Sandi, Patti, and Michelle this week at the funeral, I was able to get a crystal clear picture of what a wonderful man he was. Not only them, but everyone on that side of the family, as well as his friends and co-workers, were full of stories about how he was a friend to everyone he knew, and even to those he didn’t know. The minister at his funeral said my Dad had “the gift of friendship”, and I think that’s exactly right. Nobody ever felt uncomfortable or left out when he was around, and nobody who was ever around him stayed a stranger for very long.

So, I didn’t get to have the relationship with him that we both wanted us to have, but I know for a fact that if we had, he’d have been wonderful to me and for me. And that will have to be enough.

Rest in Peace, Dad. I love you.
