It’s nice, once in a while, to be able to praise the Democrats. The Patriot Act is not a sacred totem that need be rubber-stamped in the name of all that is good and right and true. The Bush administration didn’t play it right, and they deserved to get the smackdown they got from the Senate.
Specifically they promised this was solely a national-security, anti-terrorism law. That was a lie. It has been used for domestic law-enforcement. That right there is enough for me to want to scrap the entire thing. The war on terrorism is short-term. Not living in a police state is long-term.
Don’t lie to us, and don’t treat us like we’re stupid, and there is a lot of leeway we’ll give you, Mr. Bush. Here, you blew it.
